Diesel fuel prices at mine sites are influenced by crude oil benchmark prices (Brent, WTI, and Dubai crude) in the global energy market, regional refining margins, freight costs from the nearest terminal or port to the mine gate, government fuel excise and taxes (or rebates, as in the Australian Fuel Tax Credit scheme for off-road mining use), and currency exchange rates (for mines in countries where fuel is priced in local currency but crude oil is traded in USD). Remote mines face additional price premiums associated with long-distance road or barge delivery of fuel to site.

Studies typically present cash cost sensitivity analyses showing the impact of ±10% or ±20% changes in diesel price on operating cost per tonne and operating cost per unit of metal produced.
Mining companies employ several strategies to manage fuel price risk, including fixed-price forward purchase contracts or fuel price hedging arrangements with fuel suppliers, bulk fuel procurement to obtain volume discounts, switching to alternative fuels (LNG, compressed natural gas, hydrogen) or renewable energy (solar, wind) to reduce diesel dependency, and energy efficiency improvement programs that lower the volume of fuel consumed per unit of production, thereby reducing aggregate fuel expenditure regardless of the prevailing market price.
