Biography of Patrice L’Huillier

Patrice L’Huillier is a French civil engineer and senior mining and metals executive with more than 30 years of international experience across the bauxite, aluminium, manganese and copper industries. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Nimba Mining Company (NMC), where he is leading one of Guinea’s most strategically significant mining enterprises.

L’Huillier’s academic background is in civil engineering. He studied at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC) in France, joining the institution in 1993 and graduating as an engineer in 1996. His name appears in France’s official Journal Officiel records concerning the ENPC engineering cohort.

His professional career has been closely connected to the global mining and aluminium value chain. He began his career with Pechiney, gaining experience in the aluminium and bauxite industry, including in Guinea. Over the following decades, he developed operational and management experience across several major mining jurisdictions and commodities. His career has included work related to bauxite in Cameroon, manganese in Gabon, copper in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Katanga, and aluminium with companies including Pechiney, Rusal and Rio Tinto’s Aluminerie Alouette. His international career has also taken him to countries including Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

This combination of mining operations and downstream aluminium-industry experience has shaped L’Huillier’s approach to Guinea’s mineral resources. Rather than viewing bauxite solely as an export commodity, he has consistently emphasized the importance of developing a broader domestic value chain—from mining to alumina refining and ultimately aluminium production.

His most important recent chapter began with the creation of Nimba Mining Company in 2025. The state-owned company was established to take over and develop the Tinguilinta bauxite assets and associated infrastructure at Kamsar. The company controls a major bauxite resource and port facilities, giving it an important position in Guinea’s strategy to increase national participation in the mining sector.

Under L’Huillier’s leadership, NMC moved rapidly to restart operations. The company resumed mining at Tinguilinta in early 2026 and began rebuilding its operational capacity, with ambitious production targets. By the end of September 2026, NMC had reportedly produced more than 7 million tonnes of bauxite, moving toward its government-set target of 10 million tonnes for the year. The company also reported that 98% of its workforce was Guinean, reflecting L’Huillier’s emphasis on local skills and capacity building.

Another milestone has been NMC’s development of partnerships designed to strengthen Guinea’s domestic mining ecosystem. In January 2026, NMC and IBS Group signed a five-year mining subcontract covering drilling, extraction, overburden removal, haulage and crushing at Tinguilinta. L’Huillier described the partnership as an important step toward developing a Guinean-owned mining and industrial ecosystem.

Beyond bauxite production, L’Huillier has positioned NMC around local value addition, industrialisation and mining sovereignty. The company has been pursuing plans to develop an alumina refinery based on its bauxite resources, while also expanding into other mineral opportunities. In 2026, NMC partnered with Resolute Mining to establish Nimba Mining Gold, marking a move toward gold exploration and diversification.

His leadership philosophy also places considerable emphasis on international standards, governance, environmental responsibility and the transfer of technical expertise to Guinean professionals. NMC's stated management philosophy stresses local skills, knowledge transfer and increasing national responsibility within the company's operations.

In October 2026, L’Huillier was formally appointed Director General of Nimba Mining Company for a three-year renewable term, with his mandate linked to a performance contract with Guinea’s Ministry of Mines and Geology. The appointment reinforced his role at the centre of the country's effort to transform NMC into a modern national mining champion.

For L’Huillier, the long-term objective extends beyond increasing tonnes of bauxite exported. His vision is to help Guinea build an integrated mineral value chain in which its vast bauxite resources generate industrial capacity, skilled employment, local expertise, downstream processing and greater national economic value. In that sense, his career has come full circle—from an early connection with Guinea’s aluminium and bauxite industry to leading a state-owned company tasked with helping reshape the country’s mining future.
