Acid Neutralization

The process of chemically treating acidic mine water or leachate by adding alkaline reagents such as limestone, hydrated lime, or sodium hydroxide to raise pH to acceptable environmental or process levels. In gold and iron ore operations generating acid mine drainage, neutralization is a key treatment step that precipitates dissolved metals and renders effluent safe for discharge or reuse within the water management system.
