Basin Sedimentation
The accumulation of eroded soil particles, rock fragments, and fine mineral materials within a basin, pond, or water body resulting from mining-related disturbance. Excessive sedimentation reduces basin storage capacity, degrades water quality, and impacts aquatic ecosystems. Managing sedimentation involves controlling erosion at source, capturing sediment before it reaches water bodies, and regularly desludging retention ponds. Monitoring sedimentation rates informs the design and maintenance of sediment management infrastructure at mine sites.
