Bench Formation
The creation of a defined, stable working level in an open pit mine through excavation of rock or soil to a specified elevation, width, and face angle. Bench formation is the foundational step in open pit mining, establishing the platform from which drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling operations are conducted. Proper bench formation ensures safe equipment operation, correct pit geometry, and geotechnical stability. Formation quality affects subsequent blasting efficiency, ore recovery, and long-term slope stability in mining operations.
