Caustic Soda Plant

A Caustic Soda Plant is an industrial facility central to the Bayer Process used in bauxite refining and alumina production. It is responsible for producing, concentrating, and supplying sodium hydroxide (NaOH) — commonly known as caustic soda — which acts as the primary chemical reagent in dissolving aluminium-bearing minerals from bauxite ore. In a typical alumina refinery, bauxite is digested under high temperature and pressure in a caustic soda solution, causing aluminium hydroxide (gibbsite, boehmite, or diaspore) to dissolve into sodium aluminate while impurities such as iron oxides (red mud) remain as insoluble residues. The caustic soda plant ensures a continuous and appropriately concentrated supply of NaOH to the digestion circuit. It also plays a critical role in the recovery and reconstitution of spent caustic liquor, helping the refinery maintain chemical balance and reduce operating costs. Key sub-systems within a caustic soda plant include evaporators, heat exchangers, storage tanks, pumping stations, and safety management infrastructure to handle the highly corrosive nature of sodium hydroxide. In iron ore, gold, and diamond mining operations, caustic soda is also used for pH adjustment, flotation chemistry, cyanide circuit management, and effluent treatment, making the caustic soda plant a versatile and critical utility across various mining sectors.
