Chemical Storage refers to the infrastructure, equipment, and management systems used to safely contain and preserve chemical substances — including liquid reagents, dry chemicals, gases, and hazardous materials — at mine sites and mineral processing plants pending their use in operational circuits. Proper chemical storage is a fundamental requirement of health, safety, environment, and quality (HSEQ) management in bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond mining operations, where chemicals such as concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium cyanide (NaCN), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), lime, ferrosilicon, flocculants, and fuel oils are used in large quantities and must be managed with rigorous controls. Chemical storage facilities are designed in accordance with national chemical codes, environmental regulations, fire codes, and international standards such as ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). Key design elements include secondary containment bunds capable of holding 110% of the largest tank's volume to prevent spillage reaching waterways, adequate ventilation to disperse toxic vapors (particularly in cyanide and acid storage areas), chemical compatibility to ensure incompatible substances (e.g., acids and bases, oxidizers and flammables) are segregated, temperature-controlled environments for thermally sensitive reagents, and fire suppression systems for flammable materials. Storage tanks are constructed from materials compatible with the stored chemical (e.g., high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for acids, stainless steel for caustic, or carbon steel lined tanks). Access to chemical storage areas is restricted to trained personnel, and regular inspection, inventory management, and leak detection are mandatory components of chemical storage management programs.
