Chloride Content

Chloride content refers to the concentration of chloride ions (Cl⁻) present in ores, process water, soils, or mineral slurries encountered during mining operations across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining. In bauxite mining, elevated chloride content in the Bayer process liquor can cause scaling and corrosion in processing equipment, reducing plant efficiency and increasing maintenance costs. In gold mining, chloride ions are used in hydrometallurgical leaching circuits as oxidizing agents to dissolve gold from refractory ores, and their concentration must be carefully monitored to optimize leach kinetics. In iron ore processing, chloride content in wash water can affect pellet quality and cause corrosion in sintering and pelletizing equipment. In diamond mining, chloride measurements in groundwater and process streams inform environmental compliance and water management strategies. Chloride content is typically expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm), and is routinely measured using ion chromatography, ion-selective electrodes, or titration methods. Managing chloride levels is essential for process stability, equipment longevity, product quality, and regulatory compliance.
