Cold commissioning is the initial phase of the commissioning process for a new or refurbished mining plant or processing facility, during which equipment and systems are tested, inspected, and verified for correct installation, mechanical integrity, and functionality using water, air, or inert materials — but not the actual process feed or reagents. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond processing plants, cold commissioning follows construction completion and precedes hot commissioning (which involves the introduction of live ore and reagents). During cold commissioning, mechanical and instrumentation engineers verify that conveyor belts, pumps, mills, screens, thickeners, valves, and control systems are correctly installed, aligned, lubricated, and calibrated. Electrical checks confirm that motors rotate in the correct direction and that interlocks and safety systems function as designed. Process control systems are tested in simulation mode. Cold commissioning enables the identification and rectification of installation defects, design discrepancies, and equipment faults before the introduction of hazardous materials and ore, thereby reducing the risk of costly breakdowns, environmental incidents, and safety events during the more critical hot commissioning and ramp-up phases.
