Community Engagement Plan

A Community Engagement Plan is a formal operational document that defines the ongoing mechanisms, timelines, and responsibilities for maintaining meaningful, two-way communication between a mining company and its surrounding communities. While similar to a Community Consultation Plan, the Community Engagement Plan is broader in scope and covers the entire project lifecycle — from exploration through to closure and post-mining rehabilitation — across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining projects. It details how the company will proactively share project information, facilitate community input into decision-making, manage expectations, and respond to concerns in a timely and transparent manner. Engagement approaches documented in the plan may include community liaison officer programs, regular community meetings, site visits, newsletters, radio broadcasts, social media updates, and establishment of community advisory panels or joint working groups. The plan identifies vulnerable and marginalized groups — such as women, elderly residents, indigenous peoples, and people with disabilities — and outlines tailored strategies to ensure their meaningful participation. A well-developed Community Engagement Plan helps mining companies maintain their social license to operate, reduce conflict risk, and build long-term trust with local stakeholders.
