A conveyor gallery is an enclosed, elevated structural walkway or tunnel specifically constructed to house and protect a conveyor belt system from environmental elements while also providing safe access for operators and maintenance personnel. In mining operations involving bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamonds, conveyor galleries are commonly used to transport ore or processed material between buildings in a processing plant complex, between stockpiles and shiploaders at export terminals, or across environmentally sensitive areas where open conveyor structures would pose dust or spillage risks. Structurally, a conveyor gallery consists of a steel or reinforced concrete frame supporting a roof and side cladding, with the conveyor belt running along the length of the gallery on idler frames. Walkways are provided on one or both sides of the belt to allow inspection, maintenance access, and emergency egress. Design considerations include the structural loading from belt tension and material weight, wind and seismic loads, thermal expansion, fire protection (since conveyor belt fires in enclosed galleries can propagate rapidly), ventilation for dust and heat control, lighting for safe working conditions, and emergency stop pull-cord systems at regular intervals. In cold-climate mining operations such as Canadian gold and diamond mines, insulated conveyor galleries prevent material freezing and protect workers from extreme cold during maintenance activities.
