Cooling Water

Cooling water in mining operations refers to water used as a heat transfer medium to absorb and remove excess heat from equipment, machinery, and process systems within mines and mineral processing plants. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, cooling water systems are essential to maintain safe operating temperatures for a wide range of equipment, including compressors, hydraulic systems, grinding mills, electrical switchgear, diesel engines, pump bearings, and process heat exchangers. Cooling water circuits can be classified as open-circuit systems (where water is drawn from a natural source, used once, and discharged or treated), closed-circuit systems (where water is continuously recirculated and cooled in a heat exchanger or cooling tower), and once-through systems (common near rivers or coastal areas). In deep underground gold mines, cooling water is a life-critical utility: chilled water is pumped to underground working areas and used in bulk air coolers to reduce air temperatures in hot, deep stopes where workers are at risk of heat stress. In iron ore processing plants, cooling water is used in the quench systems of pelletising kilns and to cool the bearings of large ball mills and rod mills. In bauxite refineries, cooling water manages the significant heat generated during the Bayer process digestion and precipitation stages. Water quality management is critical in cooling water systems; untreated water can cause scaling, corrosion, microbiological growth, and fouling of heat transfer surfaces, leading to reduced efficiency and equipment damage. Treatment programs typically include pH control, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, and biocides.
