A core barrel is a specialised downhole drilling tool used in diamond core drilling to retrieve cylindrical samples of rock (cores) from depth for geological logging, geotechnical assessment, and resource estimation in mining exploration and grade control programs. Core barrels are used extensively in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining exploration to obtain undisturbed, continuous samples of subsurface rock formations. The core barrel is the innermost component of a core drilling assembly and consists of an outer barrel (which rotates during drilling), an inner barrel (which remains stationary and receives the core), a core lifter (a split ring that grips and retains the core when the drill string is pulled), and a core bit (a diamond-impregnated or surface-set bit that cuts through the rock). Core barrels are manufactured in standardised sizes following international drilling standards (such as DCDMA or NQ/HQ/PQ), with the letter designation indicating the core and hole diameter. An NQ core barrel, for example, produces a core with a diameter of 47.6 mm. In bauxite exploration, core barrels must handle soft, weathered, and sometimes unconsolidated material that is difficult to recover without sample loss. In gold mining, triple-tube core barrels are often used in fractured or soft mineralised zones to maximise core recovery and preserve sample integrity. In iron ore exploration, core barrels must penetrate hard banded iron formations (BIF). In diamond exploration (kimberlite), core barrels are selected and operated with great care to prevent breaking and losing the valuable stones embedded in the core sample.
