Crusher Feed

Crusher feed refers to the raw ore, rock, or mineral material that is introduced into a crusher for size reduction. In mining operations such as bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond extraction, the quality and characteristics of crusher feed significantly influence crusher performance, liner wear, throughput, and product particle size distribution. Key feed characteristics include particle size, hardness, moisture content, clay content, bulk density, and abrasiveness. Feed size must typically not exceed a defined maximum (the crusher's nominal feed opening) to prevent bridging or mechanical damage. Consistent, well-regulated crusher feed is critical for stable crusher operation; irregular or surging feed leads to power fluctuations, uneven liner wear, and reduced throughput efficiency. In automated plants, feed rate is controlled through apron feeders, variable-speed conveyors, and bin level sensors. Managing feed moisture and clay content is particularly important in bauxite and weathered ore environments where stickiness can cause blockages.
