Decant System

A decant system in mining is the complete integrated infrastructure used to collect, transfer, and manage water that accumulates on the surface of a tailings storage facility (TSF), residue storage area, or mine pit impoundment, comprising decant towers, risers, penstocks, outlet pipes, pumping equipment, valves, and associated monitoring and control instrumentation. In bauxite and alumina operations, the decant system for residue storage facilities is designed to recover caustic-rich process water from the surface of deposited red mud residue and return it to the refinery water circuit, contributing to the overall sodium hydroxide balance of the alumina production process. Gold mine decant systems must accommodate fluctuating water levels within the TSF as a result of changing deposition rates, seasonal rainfall, and evaporation, using a combination of gravity-driven penstocks and motorized pumps to maintain the decant pond within prescribed operational limits. Iron ore tailings facilities operate decant systems that are scaled to handle the high volumes of water generated during wet seasons and that are robust enough to manage the abrasive nature of fine iron ore slurry water. In diamond mining, decant systems recover water from kimberlite tailings ponds for recirculation into the dense media separation and washing circuits. Effective decant system operation requires continuous monitoring of pond levels, decant flow rates, and water quality, as well as regular maintenance of all mechanical and structural components to ensure safe and reliable water management in accordance with the conditions of the mine's environmental authorization and water use license.
