Defensive Driving

Defensive driving in the mining industry refers to a systematic approach to vehicle and heavy equipment operation that prioritizes the anticipation and avoidance of hazards, the safety of all road users, and the prevention of accidents in the challenging and dynamic environments characteristic of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations. Mining sites present unique traffic hazards not commonly encountered on public roads, including interactions between large haul trucks, light vehicles, and pedestrians on narrow haul roads with steep gradients, sharp bends, limited visibility, and variable road surfaces.  Defensive driving training programs in mining operations typically cover topics such as situational awareness and hazard identification, safe following distances, speed management on grades and curves, correct procedures for passing heavy equipment, communications protocols between vehicle operators, fatigue management, and pre-start vehicle inspections. Mines commonly implement specific traffic management plans that govern the flow of vehicles and the segregation of pedestrian and vehicular zones. In large open-pit iron ore or bauxite mining operations, haul trucks with payloads exceeding 300 tonnes operate continuously, making defensive driving skills essential for light vehicle drivers navigating the same road network. In alluvial diamond and gold mining environments, defensive driving is equally critical given the often remote, off-road terrain traversed by personnel. Regular refresher training, incident reporting, and behavioral observation programs reinforce defensive driving standards across all levels of a mining workforce.
