Deposit Evaluation

Deposit evaluation is a comprehensive technical and economic assessment process designed to determine whether a mineral deposit can be mined profitably under defined technical, financial, social, and environmental conditions. It integrates geological, geotechnical, metallurgical, engineering, environmental, and economic analyses to build a complete understanding of a deposit's development potential, risks, and value. Deposit evaluation applies across all major mining commodities, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamonds.  The geological component of deposit evaluation includes resource estimation, grade and tonnage modeling, geological risk assessment, and structural geology interpretation. Geotechnical evaluation addresses rock mass properties, slope stability, groundwater conditions, and subsurface engineering requirements. Metallurgical evaluation involves testwork programs to determine the processing characteristics of the ore, including comminution properties, mineral liberation, reagent consumption, and expected recovery of the target mineral. Mining engineering evaluation covers the selection of an appropriate mining method — open pit, underground, or a combination — along with equipment selection, production scheduling, and infrastructure requirements. Environmental evaluation identifies the nature and extent of environmental impacts, the requirements for environmental management plans, and the regulatory approvals necessary to proceed. Economic evaluation brings all inputs together in a financial model that calculates net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and payback period under a range of commodity price and cost scenarios. The outcome of a thorough deposit evaluation is a definitive feasibility study that provides the basis for a final investment decision by project proponents or mining companies.
