A Dragline is one of the largest and most productive earthmoving machines used in surface mining, consisting of a massive lattice boom mounted on a rotating body, with a large open bucket suspended by hoist cables and pulled toward the machine by drag cables. Unlike excavators that dig by pushing a bucket into material, a dragline excavates by dragging the bucket through soil, overburden, or soft rock and swinging the loaded bucket to deposit material at a dumping location. Draglines are primarily used in large-scale open-cut mining operations to strip overburden from coal seams and, to a lesser extent, in bauxite and some iron ore mining where thick overburden layers must be efficiently removed to expose the ore body. The largest walking draglines—such as those used in Australian coal mines—can have boom lengths exceeding 100 metres, bucket capacities of over 100 cubic metres, and machine weights exceeding 12,000 tonnes. These machines walk incrementally using large pontoon-like feet powered by an eccentric mechanism. Dragline operations require skilled operators and precise planning to optimize the casting of overburden directly into previously mined voids (a technique called cast blasting) to minimize double handling and reduce mining costs. Due to their immense size and high capital cost, draglines represent a significant long-term infrastructure investment for any mining operation.
