Emission Monitoring

Emission Monitoring in mining operations refers to the ongoing, systematic measurement and assessment of pollutants and greenhouse gases emitted from specific point sources, area sources, and mobile sources at a mine site and its associated processing facilities. For bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, emission monitoring serves as the empirical foundation for demonstrating regulatory compliance, evaluating the effectiveness of pollution control measures, and identifying emission reduction opportunities. Monitoring may be conducted using continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), periodic manual stack testing, passive sampling devices, or ambient air quality monitoring networks located around the perimeter of the mine.

In gold mining, emission monitoring focuses on cyanide stack emissions from heap leach operations, sulfur dioxide from roasting facilities, and particulate matter from tailings storage facilities. Bauxite operations monitor red mud disposal areas and calcination kilns for dust and fluoride compounds. Iron ore mines monitor crusher and conveyor transfer points, stockpile areas, and sintering plants for PM10 and PM2.5. Diamond mines monitor processing plant exhausts and surface disturbance areas. Emission monitoring data must be recorded accurately, analyzed against permit limits, and reported to environmental regulators at defined intervals. Where exceedances are detected, mines are obligated to investigate root causes, implement corrective actions, and notify regulators. Monitoring protocols must comply with applicable standards and be carried out by qualified personnel using calibrated and certified equipment.
