Energy Benchmarking

Energy Benchmarking is the practice of measuring and comparing the energy performance of a mining operation — such as a bauxite mine, gold processing plant, iron ore concentrator, or diamond sorting facility — against established internal targets, industry standards, or peer operations, with the aim of identifying performance gaps and setting improvement goals. In mining, energy intensity metrics are commonly used as benchmarking indicators, expressing energy consumption relative to a unit of production output, such as gigajoules per tonne of ore processed, kilowatt-hours per tonne of concentrate produced, or litres of diesel per tonne of material moved. Benchmarking enables mine managers and energy engineers to objectively assess whether their facility is operating efficiently relative to similar operations globally or within the same company portfolio. Data sources for benchmarking may include industry associations, government energy agencies, published academic research, or proprietary databases. The benchmarking process supports strategic decision-making by highlighting where investments in technology, process optimization, or behavioral change are most likely to yield measurable energy savings. It is also a critical component of energy management systems certified under ISO 50001 and is increasingly required by sustainability reporting frameworks such as GRI and ICMM.
