Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency in mining refers to the ratio of useful energy output — in the form of ore extracted, material moved, concentrate produced, or product refined — to the total energy input consumed in achieving that output. A more energy-efficient mining operation produces more tonnes of product per unit of energy consumed, or achieves the same production level while consuming less energy. Improving energy efficiency is a primary objective for bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining companies seeking to reduce operational costs and minimize environmental impacts, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. In practice, energy efficiency improvements in mining are achieved through a range of measures including the replacement of aging equipment with modern, high-efficiency alternatives; optimization of comminution circuits through advanced process control and predictive modeling; use of variable speed drives on pumps, fans, and conveyors; electrification of mobile equipment; heat recovery from process streams; and the adoption of real-time energy monitoring systems. Energy efficiency is a core pillar of ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems and is central to the energy strategies of leading mining companies committed to net-zero carbon targets. Regulatory bodies in many jurisdictions also mandate minimum energy efficiency standards for large energy consumers in the mining sector.
