Fixed Plant

A Fixed Plant in mining refers to the stationary infrastructure and processing equipment permanently installed at a mine site to carry out mineral beneficiation, processing, refining, or other production-related activities. Unlike mobile equipment such as haul trucks, excavators, and drill rigs, fixed plant assets are anchored in place and connected to permanent utilities including power, water, and compressed air systems. In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, fixed plants encompass a wide range of facilities that transform run-of-mine ore into a saleable or further refinable product.

In bauxite mining, fixed plant installations typically include crushing and screening circuits, beneficiation plants that remove reactive silica, and sometimes refinery facilities for alumina production in an integrated Bayer Process plant. In gold mining, the fixed plant often comprises a comminution circuit (SAG mills, ball mills), gravity concentration, flotation cells, carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits, electrowinning cells, and a gold room for smelting. In iron ore operations, fixed plant may include high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), magnetic separation circuits, pelletizing plants, and stackers and reclaimers for stockpile management.

For diamond mining, fixed plant operations include dense media separation (DMS) units, X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters, scrubbers, and pans. Fixed plant reliability is essential to overall mine throughput and production targets. Key performance indicators for fixed plant include availability, utilization, throughput rate, and recovery efficiency. Maintenance of fixed plant — both preventive and corrective — is managed through computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and forms a major component of operational expenditure (OPEX) at mining operations.
