A Flow Meter is an instrumentation device used to measure the volumetric or mass flow rate of a fluid — including water, slurry, chemical reagents, or gas — moving through a pipe, channel, or conduit within a mining process plant or infrastructure system. Flow meters are essential components of process measurement and control systems in bauxite refineries, gold processing plants, iron ore beneficiation facilities, and diamond processing plants, providing the real-time data necessary for process control, mass balance calculations, water management, reagent dosing, and operational reporting.
Mining operations present particularly demanding conditions for flow measurement, including the presence of abrasive slurries containing high concentrations of fine solid particles, highly corrosive acidic or alkaline chemical solutions, elevated temperatures and pressures in autoclave discharge and flash tank circuits, and the need for measurement in large-diameter pipes carrying high slurry flow rates. These conditions drive the selection of flow meter technologies that are robust, reliable, and accurate under harsh process conditions.
The most widely used flow meter types in mining include electromagnetic (mag) flow meters, which are ideal for conductive slurries and process water because they have no moving parts, are non-intrusive to flow, and provide high accuracy even in high-solids slurries; Coriolis flow meters, which measure mass flow and fluid density simultaneously and are used where high-accuracy mass flow measurement is required, such as in reagent dosing systems; ultrasonic flow meters, which are used as a non-invasive, clamp-on option for large pipes; vortex flow meters for steam and gas flows; and open-channel flow meters such as Parshall flumes and weirs for measuring flows in open channels and tailings management. Flow meter outputs are integrated into the plant DCS for process control, alarming, and data logging. Regular calibration and maintenance of flow meters is essential to maintaining measurement accuracy and process integrity across the plant.
