Fuel Storage

Fuel storage in mining encompasses all the facilities, systems, equipment, and associated engineering controls used to safely receive, contain, and manage petroleum products — primarily diesel, petrol, aviation fuel (AVGAS/Jet A-1), and lubricating oils — at a mine site. Effective fuel storage management is essential to ensuring uninterrupted supply to mobile equipment and fixed plant, preventing environmental contamination, minimizing fire and explosion risk, and complying with regulatory requirements across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations.

Fuel storage facilities in mining range from small day-use tanks at remote drill sites (1,000–10,000 liters) to major bulk fuel farms with combined storage capacities of several million liters. The design and construction of fuel storage infrastructure must comply with applicable national and international standards, including AS 1940 (Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids) in Australia, API 650 and NFPA 30 in the United States, and equivalent standards in other mining jurisdictions.

Key engineering elements of a compliant fuel storage system include adequate secondary containment (bunded compounds with impermeable linings capable of holding at least 110% of the largest tank volume), vapor space venting and flame arrester devices, overfill prevention systems (high-level alarms, automatic shutoffs), bonding and earthing connections to prevent static electricity buildup during transfers, cathodic protection of buried steel tanks, tank integrity testing (hydrostatic or vacuum testing), and automatic tank gauging (ATG) for continuous inventory measurement and leak detection.

Environmental protection is a primary driver of fuel storage design standards. Diesel fuel releases to soil or groundwater can cause long-lasting contamination requiring expensive remediation. Sites in sensitive environments — near water bodies, aquifers, or ecologically important areas — must apply additional protective measures including double-walled tanks, liner leak detection systems, and regular ground and groundwater monitoring programs around storage areas. Regulatory reporting of spills or releases above threshold volumes is mandatory in most jurisdictions, and fuel storage records must typically be maintained for a specified number of years as part of environmental compliance documentation.
