Mining operations involving drilling, blasting, crushing, grinding, hauling, and heavy equipment operation often generate noise levels that exceed safe occupational exposure limits, making hearing conservation a critical component of mine health and safety programs.

These devices reduce the intensity of sound reaching the ear and help protect workers from both continuous and sudden high-level noise exposure. A comprehensive hearing conservation program includes regular noise monitoring, worker training, audiometric testing, and engineering controls. Engineering measures such as equipment maintenance, noise barriers, acoustic enclosures, and vibration reduction techniques are often preferred because they reduce noise at its source. Administrative controls, including limiting exposure times and rotating workers, may also be implemented.
