Hydrometallurgical Extraction

Hydrometallurgical extraction is a process used to recover valuable metals from ores using aqueous chemistry instead of high-temperature smelting. It involves leaching metals from crushed ore using chemical solutions such as acids, alkalis, or cyanide, followed by recovery steps like solvent extraction, precipitation, or electrowinning. In gold mining, cyanide leaching is a common hydrometallurgical technique, while in bauxite processing, sodium hydroxide is used in the Bayer process to extract alumina. Hydrometallurgical extraction is also important in recovering metals from low-grade ores or complex mineral deposits where traditional pyrometallurgical methods are inefficient. The process is highly selective and can achieve high recovery rates while operating at lower energy costs compared to smelting. However, it requires careful control of chemical usage and waste management to minimize environmental impact. Hydrometallurgical extraction plays a growing role in modern mining due to its efficiency, adaptability, and ability to process ores that are otherwise economically unviable.
