Industrial water is the general term used to describe all water consumed, utilized, or managed within a mining or mineral processing operation, encompassing process water, cooling water, potable water, fire suppression water, and water used for dust control and equipment maintenance. In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, industrial water represents one of the most strategically important and operationally critical resources. Mining operations are often among the largest consumers of water in the regions where they operate, which creates both operational dependencies and significant social and environmental responsibilities. The sources of industrial water for mining operations vary widely based on geographic location and hydrological context, and may include surface water from rivers and reservoirs, groundwater extracted via boreholes, harvested rainfall and stormwater, recycled and reclaimed water from tailings storage facilities, and purchased municipal water. Water accounting, including the measurement and tracking of all water inputs, outputs, consumption, and losses, has become a standard component of responsible mine management and environmental reporting. In arid or water-stressed regions where many major gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations are located — such as the Pilbara in Western Australia, the Atacama Desert, and parts of West Africa — industrial water management is a primary operational challenge. Innovations in water efficiency, including paste tailings technology, dry stack tailings, and advanced recirculation systems, are increasingly adopted to minimize net water consumption per tonne of ore processed.
