Injury Frequency Rate

Injury frequency rate (IFR), also commonly expressed as total recordable injury frequency rate (TRIFR) or lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR), is a standardized safety performance metric used extensively in the mining industry to measure the rate at which workplace injuries occur relative to the total number of hours worked by employees and contractors. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — all of which involve significant inherent occupational hazards including exposure to heavy machinery, explosives, unstable ground, elevated temperatures, dust, and chemicals — injury frequency rates are among the most widely reported and scrutinized safety key performance indicators (KPIs) by mining companies, regulators, investors, and the broader community.  The injury frequency rate is typically calculated as the number of recordable injuries (or lost time injuries, depending on the metric) per one million man-hours worked (the conventional exposure base in mining), using the formula: IFR = (Number of injuries × 1,000,000) ÷ Total hours worked. A lost time injury (LTI) is defined as any work-related injury that results in the injured worker being unable to attend work on the following scheduled working day. Total recordable injuries include all LTIs plus medical treatment cases and restricted work cases. Mining companies report injury frequency rates in their annual sustainability and health and safety reports, and these figures are closely benchmarked against industry peers, commodity sector averages, and regulatory expectations. Zero harm aspirations — aiming for zero fatalities and zero serious injuries — have become the stated safety goal of most major mining companies operating in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond sectors. Leading indicators such as hazard reporting rates, safety observations, and near-miss reporting are increasingly used alongside lagging indicators like LTIFR to provide a more proactive and predictive view of safety performance across mining operations.
