International Finance Corporation

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is a member of the World Bank Group and is the largest global development finance institution focused exclusively on financing private sector projects in developing countries. In the mining sector, the IFC plays a significant role in mobilizing private capital for responsible mining development in emerging and frontier markets, providing financing instruments — including loans, equity investments, guarantees, and risk mitigation products — to bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining projects that demonstrate strong economic viability, sound environmental and social management, and alignment with host country development objectives. The IFC's involvement in mining projects is particularly impactful in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

The IFC's participation in a mining project brings not only capital but also critical credibility and risk mitigation value. Many commercial lenders and institutional investors use IFC participation as a signal of rigorous due diligence and adherence to international best practice standards. Central to IFC mining investments is the requirement for compliance with the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability — a set of eight standards addressing issues including environmental assessment, labor and working conditions, community health and safety, land acquisition and involuntary resettlement, biodiversity conservation, indigenous peoples' rights, cultural heritage protection, and stakeholder engagement.

For bauxite projects, IFC financing may support bauxite mine development and associated refinery infrastructure in West Africa. For gold mining, IFC has supported artisanal and small-scale mining formalization programs alongside larger mine development financing. In iron ore, IFC investment can facilitate development of rail and port infrastructure that enables landlocked deposits to reach export markets. In diamond mining, IFC engages on issues of beneficiation policy, responsible sourcing, and artisanal diamond governance through its support for the Kimberley Process frameworks. IFC's investment standards have become globally influential benchmarks for responsible mining finance.
