Landform rehabilitation encompasses both the physical reconstruction of terrain — including grading and contouring of waste rock dumps, recontouring of mine pit walls, reshaping of tailings storage facility surfaces, and installation of drainage structures — and the subsequent biological restoration of soil and vegetation to re-establish ecosystem function and biodiversity. The physical landform rehabilitation process begins with the design and construction of stable slope profiles, typically using geotechnical analysis to define safe long-term slope angles and erosion modeling to ensure that surface runoff velocities remain below erosive thresholds. Drainage networks — including contour banks, collector drains, drop structures, and outlet channels — are engineered to safely convey design storm events without causing unacceptable erosion. Once physical landform stability is achieved, topsoil — previously salvaged and stockpiled during pre-mining activities — is spread across rehabilitated surfaces to provide a biologically active growth medium capable of supporting vegetation establishment. Seeding and planting programs using species appropriate to the target vegetation community and local climatic conditions are then implemented, often supplemented by mulching, fertilization, and water-harvesting earthworks to promote seedling establishment.
