Metallurgical recovery is the percentage of the total valuable metal or mineral contained in the ore feed that is successfully extracted and captured as a final saleable or intermediate product during mineral processing operations. It is one of the most critical performance indicators in any mining operation, as it directly determines the revenue yield per tonne of ore processed and has a major influence on project economics and resource utilization. In bauxite refining, metallurgical recovery is measured as the proportion of available alumina extracted from bauxite relative to the total alumina content entering the digestion circuit; losses occur primarily in the red mud residue. In gold operations, it represents the percentage of feed gold recovered in the doré product, with losses distributed across tailings, activated carbon fines, and solution bleeds. Iron ore metallurgical recovery tracks the proportion of total iron units in the feed that report to the final concentrate product, with rejects carrying the remainder. For diamond processing, recovery refers to the carat percentage of the total diamond population in the ore that is physically captured and sorted, accounting for losses during crushing (which can shatter large stones) and in DMS and X-ray circuit inefficiencies. Metallurgical recovery is influenced by ore type and variability, grind size, reagent selection, equipment design, and operational discipline.
