The content of a mine induction program is tailored to the specific hazards and requirements of each mine site but typically covers a comprehensive range of topics. Safety fundamentals addressed include the site's Fatal Risk Standards or critical controls, which are specific rules designed to prevent fatalities from known fatal hazards such as ground fall, vehicle collisions, explosives misuse, and falls from height. Workers are introduced to the site's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements — including hard hats, high-visibility vests, steel-capped boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection — and must demonstrate understanding of when and how to use them.
Emergency response procedures covered in mine induction typically include the location and operation of emergency assembly points (muster stations), fire suppression equipment, first aid facilities, emergency shutdown systems, and communication protocols for contacting the control room or emergency services. In underground gold and diamond mines, self-rescuer use and refuge chamber procedures are additional critical induction topics.
Environmental awareness components of mine induction cover waste management, spill containment, the identification of environmentally sensitive areas, and the reporting of environmental incidents.
