Moisture content is the proportion of water present within a mineral sample, typically expressed as a percentage of the sample's total wet weight or, less commonly, its dry weight, and represents one of the most fundamental quality parameters monitored throughout the mining value chain from extraction to final sale. Moisture content affects mining and processing operations in several important ways: it influences the effective density and handling characteristics of bulk material, affects the efficiency of crushing, grinding, and chemical processing steps, and determines the net dry tonnage of saleable product once water weight is excluded from commercial settlements. In bauxite and iron ore mining, moisture content is of particular safety significance because excessive moisture in fine-grained cargo can lead to liquefaction during sea transport, a phenomenon that has caused vessel instability and sinkings, making compliance with transportable moisture limit regulations mandatory before shipment. In gold processing, moisture content affects leaching kinetics and reagent consumption, while in diamond mining, moisture levels in gravel or kimberlite influence screening and washing plant efficiency. Moisture content is routinely measured using moisture analyzers or moisture balances at multiple points along the production and logistics chain to support both operational control and regulatory compliance.
