Noise Monitoring

Noise monitoring is the systematic measurement, recording, and analysis of sound levels within mining environments to ensure compliance with occupational and environmental standards. In mining operations—particularly open-pit bauxite, underground gold mines, and large iron ore processing plants—noise monitoring is essential due to the presence of high-powered equipment and dynamic operational activities.

Monitoring is conducted using sound level meters, dosimeters, and fixed or mobile monitoring stations placed strategically across the mine site. These devices measure parameters such as instantaneous sound pressure levels, equivalent continuous sound levels (Leq), and peak noise levels. Data collected is used to assess worker exposure, evaluate environmental impact, and identify high-risk noise zones.

Noise monitoring programs are typically part of a mine’s environmental management system (EMS) and occupational health and safety (OHS) framework. They are often required under environmental permits and international standards such as ISO 9612 for occupational noise assessment.
