Ore Blending

Ore blending is the operational practice of combining ore from different sources, stockpiles, or zones within a mine, often varying in grade, mineralogy, or impurity content, to produce a more consistent and predictable feed for the processing plant or for direct shipment to customers. Blending is widely used across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining because ore bodies are rarely uniform, and processing plants generally perform best, and most efficiently, when fed material within a narrow range of grade and chemical specification. In iron ore mining, blending is critical for meeting strict customer specifications regarding iron content, silica, alumina, and phosphorus levels, often requiring the combination of ore from multiple pits or benches. Bauxite blending similarly manages variability in alumina and reactive silica content to maintain consistent feed quality for alumina refineries. In gold mining, blending can help manage the proportion of refractory versus free-milling ore fed to the plant, while in diamond mining it may involve managing ore from different geological units with varying diamond grade and size distribution. Effective ore blending requires accurate grade control data, often derived from grade control drilling and assay results, along with careful stockpile management and material tracking systems to ensure blended feed meets target specifications.
