In-Pit Crushing refers to the practice of locating primary or primary and secondary crushing equipment directly within the open-pit mine, rather than at a fixed surface processing facility. This approach eliminates the need to haul uncrushed, bulky ROM (run-of-mine) ore long distances by truck to a surface crusher, replacing truck haulage beyond the crusher with a more cost-effective conveyor system. The crusher may be fixed at a strategic pit location, semi-mobile (relocated periodically as the pit deepens), or fully mobile (mounted on crawlers and moved frequently to follow the mining face). In bauxite mining, in-pit crushing reduces the handling of sticky, wet bauxite over long haulage distances. In gold mining, it is applied to oxide ore deposits where heap leaching is the processing method. In large iron ore open pits, semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems dramatically reduce truck fleet sizes and operating costs. In diamond operations, in-pit crushing must account for diamond breakage risks. The selection of crusher type, location, and mobility class depends on pit geometry, ore hardness, production rate, and mine life.
