Vacuum Filter

A vacuum filter is a solid-liquid separation device that applies a negative pressure (vacuum) across a porous filtering medium to draw liquid through the medium while retaining solid particles on its surface, producing a dewatered filter cake. In mining applications across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations, vacuum filters are used extensively in mineral processing plants to separate valuable mineral concentrates from process water, dewater tailings, and recover reagents for recycling. Common types of vacuum filters used in mining include vacuum belt filters, vacuum drum filters, vacuum disc filters, and vacuum horizontal table filters, each suited to particular slurry characteristics and throughput requirements. Vacuum drum filters consist of a rotating cylindrical drum covered with a filter medium that is partially submerged in a feed trough; as the drum rotates, the vacuum draws liquid through the medium, building a filter cake that is subsequently discharged by a scraper or blow-back mechanism. Vacuum disc filters use multiple rotating discs covered with filter cloth and are particularly suited to high-throughput dewatering of fine-grained concentrates such as iron ore concentrate or gold flotation concentrate. In bauxite processing, vacuum filters are used in the Bayer process for the filtration of red mud, gibbsite, and other process streams. In diamond processing, vacuum filtration assists in the recovery and recycling of process water from tailings streams, which is particularly important in water-scarce mining environments. The selection of the appropriate vacuum filter type for a specific application is determined by factors such as slurry rheology, particle size, required cake moisture, and available floor space in the processing plant.
