Waste minimization is the application of engineering design, process optimisation, and operational practices aimed at reducing the quantity, toxicity, and environmental impact of waste materials generated throughout the mining and mineral processing lifecycle. In bauxite mining, waste minimization strategies include selective mining techniques that reduce the volume of stripped overburden and the adoption of dry stacking technologies for red mud disposal, which reduces land requirements and water consumption compared to wet impoundment. In gold mining, waste minimization focuses on reducing the production of acid-generating tailings through ore blending, pre-treatment, or neutralisation, as well as minimising cyanide consumption through circuit optimisation. Iron ore mining achieves waste minimization through pelletising fine ore rather than discarding it, and through improved drill-and-blast designs that reduce dilution of ore with low-grade waste. Diamond mining operations minimise waste by improving the accuracy of ore delineation models to avoid processing barren kimberlite, and by implementing optical and X-ray sorting technology to reject waste rock early in the processing stream. Waste minimization delivers environmental, financial, and reputational benefits and is increasingly mandated by national environmental regulations and voluntary mining industry standards.
