Water Consumption

Water consumption in mining refers to the net volume of water permanently removed from the local water cycle through incorporation into products, evaporation, seepage to groundwater beyond recovery, or discharge to non-recoverable locations during mining, processing, and ancillary activities. It is distinguished from water withdrawal, which measures the gross volume of water extracted from a source, because some withdrawn water is recycled within operations and returned to the source after use. In bauxite mining and alumina refining, water consumption is substantial due to the Bayer process, which involves large-scale evaporation, red mud disposal, and liquor management. Gold mining consumes water in ore leaching circuits, cyanide detoxification systems, and dust suppression, with average consumption benchmarks varying significantly between heap leach operations and conventional milling circuits. Iron ore mining operations — particularly those using wet processing methods — consume significant water in scrubbing, cycloning, and tailings management. Diamond mines consume water in dense media separation, slurry transport systems, and X-ray sorting circuits. Water consumption is expressed per unit of ore processed or per unit of product sold, and is tracked as a key environmental performance indicator. Reducing water consumption is a strategic priority for mining companies operating in water-stressed regions, where community and regulatory pressures to reduce freshwater use are intensifying.
