Weathering Profile

A weathering profile in mining describes the vertical succession of progressively altered rock zones from the surface downward, reflecting the intensity and duration of chemical and physical weathering processes that have acted upon the parent geological material over time. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, the characterization of the weathering profile is a fundamental component of geological modeling, resource estimation, mine planning, and metallurgical test work programs. A standard weathering profile from top to bottom typically comprises: transported or residual soil (completely decomposed material lacking original rock texture); saprolite or completely weathered rock (material retaining original rock fabric but with primary minerals entirely altered to secondary clay minerals and oxides); highly weathered rock (significant alteration with retained rock structure); moderately weathered rock; slightly weathered rock; and fresh unweathered bedrock. In tropical bauxite mining, the weathering profile is the resource itself, and detailed characterization of gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore content, reactive silica concentrations, and available alumina grades within the profile is central to mine value optimization. In gold exploration and mining, the weathering profile determines the boundary between oxide ore (amenable to low-cost cyanide heap leaching) and primary sulfide ore (requiring high-cost pressure oxidation or roasting prior to leaching). In kimberlite diamond mining, the weathering profile controls the transition between soft, disaggregated yellow ground near surface and competent blue ground at depth, which has significant implications for mining method, blasting requirements, and diamond liberation efficiency in processing.
