Wet Scrubbing

Wet Scrubbing is an ore preparation and beneficiation process widely employed in bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond mining to remove surface coatings, clay binders, fine impurities, and deleterious materials from run-of-mine ore using high-pressure water and mechanical agitation. The process involves feeding crushed or sized ore into a rotating cylindrical drum or trough-style scrubber where it is subjected to vigorous tumbling action combined with water sprays and jets. This action breaks apart clay-bound aggregates, loosens iron oxide coatings on bauxite nodules, removes organic matter from gold-bearing gravels, and disaggregates kimberlite matrix from diamonds in alluvial or primary diamond operations. In bauxite processing, wet scrubbing is particularly important for ores with high reactive silica content or significant clay overburden contamination, as clay can coat aluminium-rich gibbsite and boehmite particles, reducing refinery efficiency. For iron ore, scrubbing improves the liberation of iron minerals from gangue, raising overall product grade. The scrubber discharge is typically fed directly into a wet screening plant where water and fine waste are separated from the washed product. Water consumption in wet scrubbing is significant, requiring robust water management and recycling systems, particularly in mining regions where water availability is limited. Wet scrubbing dramatically improves downstream processing performance, reduces reagent consumption, and enhances product quality across all four key mining commodities where it is applied.
