Wheel Chock

A Wheel Chock is a safety device of fundamental importance across all surface mining operations — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines — designed to prevent unintended movement of parked vehicles, mobile plant, and heavy mining equipment on sloped or uneven terrain. Constructed from high-strength materials such as reinforced rubber, polyurethane, aluminium, or steel, wheel chocks are wedge-shaped or triangular blocks placed firmly against the tyres of stationary equipment on the uphill and downhill sides to mechanically restrain the vehicle against rolling. In surface mining environments, where haul trucks can weigh up to 400 tonnes loaded and operate on steep ramp grades of up to 10%, the consequences of a runaway vehicle are catastrophic, making wheel chock discipline a non-negotiable safety requirement enforced through site rules and statutory regulations. Wheel chocks are used on haul trucks, water carts, service vehicles, excavators, bulldozers, scrapers, and all auxiliary equipment parked anywhere other than a flat, level surface. Mining operations typically enforce a wheel chock policy that requires operators to deploy chocks immediately upon parking, and supervisors conduct regular compliance audits. Most sites also mandate that wheel chocks be brightly coloured — typically yellow or orange — for high visibility in dusty mining environments, and many operations use chocks fitted with chains or cables to prevent them from being left behind when a vehicle departs. The management of wheel chocks is tracked through inventory systems to ensure sufficient stocks are maintained at workshops, fuel bays, and strategic locations throughout the mine.
