Wildlife Corridor

A Wildlife Corridor is a designated strip or network of natural or restored habitat that connects fragmented ecosystems separated by mining infrastructure, enabling the safe movement of wildlife populations between isolated habitat patches. In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining — operations that often involve large-scale land clearing, infrastructure development, and multi-decade operational footprints — wildlife corridors are an essential component of mine biodiversity management plans, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance frameworks. Mining operations in biologically sensitive regions such as the Amazon, the Guinea Highlands, the Pilbara in Australia, or the Kimberley in Western Australia are often required by environmental regulators and international lending standards to design and maintain wildlife corridors as a condition of project approval. These corridors may take the form of retained vegetation strips between cleared areas, rehabilitated mine waste dumps planted with native species, fauna underpasses and overpasses beneath or above haul roads and conveyor belts, or riparian buffer zones along watercourses passing through the mine lease. The ecological effectiveness of wildlife corridors is monitored through systematic fauna surveys, camera trap programs, radio telemetry tracking of key species, and vegetation health assessments. Mining companies increasingly collaborate with conservation organizations and government agencies to ensure that corridor design reflects the movement ecology of target species such as elephants, large carnivores, primates, and threatened reptiles and amphibians. Effective wildlife corridor management contributes to achieving no-net-loss or net-positive biodiversity outcomes, which are increasingly required by international financial institutions as conditions of project financing.
