Work Order System

A Work Order System is a computerized or paper-based management tool used across all mining operations — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines — to formally plan, authorize, assign, track, and close maintenance, engineering, and operational tasks performed on equipment, infrastructure, and facilities throughout the mine. The work order system serves as the backbone of maintenance management, ensuring that every repair, inspection, modification, overhaul, or servicing activity is documented, resourced with the correct spare parts and labour, and completed within defined timeframes and to specified technical standards. Work orders are generated from multiple sources including operator-identified defects reported at pre-start inspections, scheduled preventive maintenance routines derived from original equipment manufacturer service intervals, predictive maintenance triggers from condition monitoring systems, safety observations and incident investigations, production improvement projects, and statutory regulatory requirements. Modern mining work order systems are integrated within Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) platforms such as SAP PM, IBM Maximo, or Infor EAM, which automatically schedule work, reserve spare parts from the warehouse management system, allocate tradespeople from the workforce planning module, and capture labour hours, material costs, and equipment downtime for analysis. Key performance indicators tracked through the work order system include backlog management, schedule compliance, mean time between failures, maintenance cost per tonne of ore produced, and wrench time versus non-productive time ratios. Effective work order discipline is directly linked to equipment availability, production reliability, and overall mine profitability.
