A Working Bench is an active mining level or step within an open-pit mine where excavation, drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling activities are currently being conducted. Benches are designed as horizontal or slightly inclined platforms cut into the pit walls to facilitate safe and efficient extraction of ore and waste rock. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, working benches provide access for heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, haul trucks, drills, and dozers. Bench dimensions, including height, width, and slope angles, are carefully engineered to maximize resource recovery while maintaining geotechnical stability and worker safety. Proper bench management helps control rockfall risks, improve equipment productivity, and optimize mining operations. The location and sequence of working benches are determined by mine plans that consider ore grades, production targets, geological conditions, and environmental requirements.
