The Sangarédi Bauxite Project, located on Guinea's Boké Prefecture plateau, hosts one of the world's largest, highest-grade bauxite deposits, averaging 50–55% alumina content. Operated by Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) since 1973, ownership is split between the Guinean government (49%) and Halco Mining Inc. (51%), a consortium of Rio Tinto, Alcoa, and Dadco. Ore travels 135 km by rail to Kamsar's coastal port for processing and export. Capacity has expanded to 18.5 Mtpa, targeting 25–28 Mtpa. However, environmental concerns — including river siltation, habitat loss, and impacts on endangered Western Chimpanzees — remain significant challenges.
