Compagnie du Transguinéen (CTG) launched the pilot phase of its Job Dating program at the École nationale des arts et métiers (ENAM) in Conakry, marking a significant milestone in local content development for Guinea's transformative Simandou mining and rail project.
The recruitment initiative, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Technical Education, Vocational Training and Employment (METFPE) through AGUIPE, brought together over 300 technically trained Guinean youth with CTG subcontractors, establishing a direct bridge between qualified graduates and employment opportunities generated by the Simandou project.
Strategic Alignment with National Development Goals
The job dating event represents the practical implementation of Simandou Academy, a strategic mechanism designed to strengthen Guinea's human capital and address the country's technical and professional skills deficit. The initiative aligns directly with President Mamadi Doumbouya's vision to transform Simandou into a major engine of prosperity and employment for Guinean youth.
Dr. Moussa Bérété, Deputy Director General of CTG, emphasized the company's commitment to local content development. "CTG places particular emphasis on local content. The President's vision is very clear: CTG must be a Guinean company for Guineans," he stated. "Our local content strategy is built on four pillars, with local employment as the first priority."
Bérété announced ambitious hiring targets, revealing that CTG plans to recruit approximately 5,000 people over the next three years, with 80% designated for Guinean nationals. Significantly, he clarified these would be permanent positions rather than temporary contracts, underscoring the project's long-term commitment to local workforce development.
Multi-Sector Recruitment Focus
The recruitment drive targets critical technical disciplines essential to rail operations and infrastructure development, including mechanics, electrical engineering, civil engineering, industrial maintenance, transport, and logistics. Subcontractors conducted express interviews lasting 10 to 15 minutes with pre-screened candidates who had undergone comprehensive preparation through AGUIPE's coaching program.
Abdallah Konaté, Deputy Director General of AGUIPE, described the initiative as transcending simple recruitment. "This is the concrete expression of a strong commitment to offer young Guineans, particularly graduates of technical and vocational education, the opportunity to participate directly in the greatest industrial project of our generation," he said.
AGUIPE implemented a structured preparation program for candidates, including CV coaching, interview simulations, and skills development workshops to enhance employability and professional readiness.
Rail Infrastructure Development Progress
Mamoudou Nagnalen Barry, Chairman of CTG's Board of Directors, provided significant operational updates regarding the rail project's advancement. CTG has ordered a fleet of over 140 locomotives, with eight already delivered and deliveries continuing at a rate of five to ten locomotives monthly through the end of 2027.
This rolling stock deployment creates immediate and ongoing demand for trained personnel, particularly locomotive operators, with recruitment planned on a phased basis aligned with equipment deliveries. Barry emphasized the legal framework supporting local hiring, noting that regulations mandate prioritization of Guinean workers, with penalties for non-compliance.
However, he also issued a frank assessment of the competitive landscape, acknowledging that positions are being filled by workers from neighboring countries including Sierra Leone and Senegal operating within the corridor. "You must fight to take these positions," he urged candidates, stressing that even transformative projects like Simandou require individual initiative and determination to secure employment.
Public-Private Partnership Model
Dr. Julien Bongono, Secretary General of METFPE, representing Minister Aminata Kaba, highlighted the structural significance of the project beyond mineral extraction. "This express recruitment materializes the President's will to make this project an engine of professional integration, not simply a mining exploration project," he stated.
Bongono emphasized that the ministry's role extends beyond basic training to career development, calling for enhanced synergy between government ministries, mining companies, and training institutions. He proposed developing customized programs, targeted learning modules, and certifications in partnership with CTG and its contractors, focusing on specific equipment operation and safety standards.
The collaborative framework positions the TransGuinéen railway as the backbone linking Guinea's mines to industries and connecting educational institutions to employment opportunities, creating an integrated ecosystem for skills development and deployment.
Expected Outcomes and National Talent Database
The job dating initiative aims to achieve measurable results, including participation of at least 500 youth, pre-selection of qualified profiles, and establishment of a national talent database. This database will serve as a sustainable resource for ongoing recruitment needs as the Simandou project expands.
Beyond immediate hiring outcomes, the program seeks to improve candidates' professional preparation levels, strengthen the CTG-AGUIPE partnership, and establish a durable local recruitment mechanism for the TransGuinéen railway operations.
Sékou Camara, a graduate from the Matoto railway school, expressed the enthusiasm shared by many participants. "Our expectation is to access employment. We have been prepared for job search activities, and that's why we are here," he said, hoping to join CTG's locomotive operator team.
Simandou Academy 2040 Vision
The initiative forms part of the broader Simandou Academy 2040 framework, which aims to create a national competency pool capable of meeting current and future TransGuinéen requirements. This long-term vision emphasizes transforming Guinea's resources with Guinean workers, promoting sustainable local content development throughout the mining value chain.
The job dating format, combining structured professional coaching, direct employer engagement, and post-event follow-up, establishes a replicable model for connecting technical education outputs with industrial labor market demands across Guinea's expanding mining sector.
